A pineapple

We harvested and ate our first home grown pineapple about a month ago, it was delicious, but nothing special, just a typical pineapple. My suegra bought it from our gardener, I don't know where he got it, here in Cuernavaca. It was in a pot, and had one small pineapple growing on it when we got it. We left it in the pot and just watered and fertilized it once in a while.

I told one of my daughters about it a few months ago and she told me she had been on a tour of a Dole pineapple plant, or plantation in Hawaii a few years ago. The guide from Dole told the people on the tour that a pineapple plant only produces one pineapple, and it takes several years for it to mature.

I know nothing about pineapple cultivation, but it did take 8 or 9 months for our first one to grow from the size of a small pear to the normal size. When we harvested it, we saw that two more pineapples about the size of a small pear were growing on the same plant. Maybe we have some kind of a hybrid, or we are just lucky.

I had planned to try to find, and buy some more plants, but the one we did eat was nothing special. It was good, but not outstanding. We will keep the one plant we have for the novelty of it, but we will probably continue to buy our fresh azucar piñas (sugar pineapples) at Mega here.

Everybody that saw our pineapple in our patio wanted us to cut it off and give it to them, they don't know how long it takes to grow one of the darn things.

I planted four pineapple "heads" in my yard along the MIchoacan coast. I watered and fertilized them for approximately 18 months and then finally after the plants growing very large they produced pineapples! Unfortunately, only my brother in law got to sample them since we were not there. It was a fun project but I will still buy them in the market place keeping one as novelty.

You are right about keeping one as a novelty and a fulfilled dream. We now have the satisfaction of knowing we did it, and the peace of mind in knowing it is not worth the trouble to try to grow them on a larger scale.

We will eat the next two pineapples on our plant if they grow to maturity, but we won't lose any sleep over it if the plant quits producing after that.

How many people can say they grew their own pineapple? :)

We grew one pineapple. It was delicious and you're right, itis cool to be able to say you grew a pineapple. No more though, not enough room.
