Hey, basically all I am doing right now is wanting to fly down to Merida for 5 or 6 weeks but I was thinking to only buy a one way ticket, does someone know if that is possible, my visa is up in March and I would then fly back. Thanks for any help. Norma

You can come on a one-way ticket. But if you plan to fly back why not buy a round trip ticket? A RT ticket will be a lot cheaper than two one-ways.

Hello,

I'm not as good as Rolly about these things, but Normac288 needs to know that the Mexican Statutes require that when she leaves Mexico she surrender her Tourist Permit. No matter what she calls it. FMM, Visa or 180 days.

If she does NOT surrender that permit, she is supposedly subject to a daily fine. I have no idea what it is. But that permit is NOT valid for re-entry into Mexico. Depending on where she tries to enter Mexico, it just may be permitted even though it is NOT valid. She shouldn't take that chance. She should just apply for a new Tourist Permit and pay the cost. She is worried that "everything is computerized" so when she applies for a new Tourist permit, the old one just may show up (I don't think so) but if it does she will just have to pay the fine which may or may not be collected as well as the cost of the new permit.

It all depends on where she crosses and on the migra she encounters.

As ever, jerezano

Based upon our personal experiences, Jerezano's statements may be in error. Our experiences at the Santa Teresa, NM/San Jeronimo crossing have been that the old FMT could be used for multiple in/outs as long as they were all made in the original 180 day window. In fact, we have had Immigration officials attempt to talk us out of canceling a FMT to save the fee. That is what got us in trouble when we did not cancel and the FMT expired while we were NOB. After the incident when we got fined for expired FMT's, 16 days later when crossing back NOB, they again tried to talk us out of canceling. There was NO way we weren't going to cancel after what we went through going into MX!

One thing that may compound Norma's situation is that she crossed into the US via automobile and now she wants to fly back in. Typically, the airlines automatically include the FMM fee in the ticket price and there might be a real issue with Immigration at the airport. The only clue that I can provide is that we were caught not through our actual FMT's but rather by a lack of exit stamp in one of our US Passports.
