traffic light confusion

I think I saw this on one of the fora before, but I can't seem to locate it. At a traffic light that has a green arrow for a left hand turn, when can you go straight? What if the light is green and the green arrow points left? Can you only turn left or can you go straight ahead as well? I seem to recall that when that left hand arrow is on you can ONLY turn left. My husband thinks that if the green light is on as well, you can go straight also. We have a very assiduous traffic cop on the northshore of Lake Chapala and I'm not interested in funding his Christmas party -- so we want to do this right. The guy seems to pop up out of the asphalt to ticket gringos.

Green arrow only = turn only
Green light + green arrow = straight and turn both allowed (known as a protected turn)

He wins again! But he'll be so happy that I'll feel like a winner! Thanks, Rolly. (PS if info is incorrect, will you pay the mordida? :))
: Green arrow only = turn only
: Green light + green arrow = straight and turn both allowed (known as a protected turn)
