MEXICO CITY (AP) -- The U.S. State Department updated its travel warning for Mexico on Thursday, adding three states to its list of places it recommends Americans avoid when south of the border.
The new warning adds the northern state of Tamaulipas, parts of the northern Pacific coast state of Sinaloa and the western state of Michoacan.
It notes that all three are troubled by organized crime and drug violence.
The State Department previously had warned against traveling to the northern states of Chihuahua, Durango and Coahuila, also crime and drug hot spots.

It is apparently a current warning. At least according to a posting I saw on another forum (OH NO, I mentioned another forum). The timing appears to make sense though.

I might jump in here and tell you that while I am recuperating here in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, we have had numerous warnings on the television Channel 5 and 4 from both The US and Mexican governments which aside from the normal "canned warnings", also include additional warnings, using phrases such as, "apparently targeting Americans" also mentioning the Columbia number II bridge crossing. It sure is making planning my trip home a little challenging. Not to many choices left to chose from. That "jar of beans" apparently has a big leak of "white beans". That damned "black bean" seems to still be there for me and possibly multiplying. (smiling) I sure wish altahabana were still around on this forum, to offer some possibilities. Folks, he does know his roads and is really current on his observations! Make no mistake about it.

Hi Mexliving,

Sorry Mexliving, maybe it is the late time here (now 1:45 AM); or maybe it's just this old man after to much anesthesia over the past few surgeries, in the last three months at the hands of the VA, but I don't get this response. Please explain.

Thanks

As I read this warning it's makes you wonder when it states parts of the Northern Pacfic coast state of Sinalo?Culiacan has for some time been on the warning list to avoid But the word Northern is what I wound about, that becomes a larg area that a lot of us travel through on highway 15, such as Guasave & Los Mochis as far as large populated areas?

It'a nice to know that some people at least appreciate the information I pass along.

I stay informed about road conditions in the NE Mexican frontera (Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon), because my family and I travel some of these roads and part of my work is in the service sector of the transborder transportation industry. I also have friends and business collegues who live all over the tri-state area and they are valuable sources of information. What I know is certainly not based on U.S. State Department advisories because these warnings usually lag days, weeks or months behind the general conditions that cause them to be issued and are prompted by some higher profile event that attracts international media attention.

The addition of Tamaulipas to this advisory list surprised me because I had assumed it was on the list all along. There have been problems on nearly all the highways in this state ever since the outbreak of the war between the Gulf cartel and Zetas in February 2010. I am sure this latest warning was sparked by the discovery of the mass grave (narcofosa) near San Fernando because it seems some of the victims were "levantado" from commercial buses. Who those victims were is not clear.

I appreciate the info passed along.

A 1st grade teacher I teach with was kidnapped yesterday along with her husband and 2 other families in other cars driving back from Coahuila to Pachuca. They are fine and were let go. Everything stolen including cars. Dropped off on the side of a highway further away from where they were taken. Just never thought I'd know someone being kidnapped or forced off the side of the rode and car stolen. Now to date, this is the 2nd family we know this has happened to since December. We are in Hidalgo and scary things are starting to happen here too. We are Not leaving...but being extra careful. We won't be driving home to USA this summer though when school lets out which bums me. Not saying this is gonna happen to everyone...but be careful is all.

All I know is it happened on a non-toll road. We are on vacation for two weeks so I won't see the teacher until then to ask. Sorry.
