Detailed driving instructions, mileages, places to stay, locations of gas stations, where to turn, etc., etc., are all right here on MexConnect: http://mexconnect.com/mex_dt/dtdrivinglaredochapala.html
While these are nominally directions to nearby Lake Chapala, the directions are perfectly clear on where to turn to go on into Guadalajara instead-only two hours away from that intersection.
There is a lot of info at that site! Data is presented in several forms, Annotated or Point to Point.
I hope this is some help to you. At one time I was a "newbie" driver in Mexico too, scared witless, but that was 40 years ago. Somewhat similar instructions distributed at one time by Sanborns Insurance got me over the hurdle.
You may also wish to invest in a good Mexican driving map. I prefer the Guia Roji "Gran Atlas de Carreteras" for car driving; its major defect IMHO is that the mapmaker tends to insert roads that the Mexican Government says they intend to build but haven't quite gotten around to doing yet. I live in a border area, and can buy the Guia in local WalMarts for about US$15. Individual folding maps of states are also available from the same source, but I tend to lose or misplace those a lot more easily than the Gran Atlas when I'm actually in the car inside Mexico.
Other excellent Mexican maps exist, and your taste in maps may well differ. I would advise buying your map BEFORE you cross into Mexico; good stores for buying maps are rare along your intended route, and not common anywhere in northern Mexico.
Elliott Moore
