no car title

If I cross into mexico to get my car permit with no title will it be allright? I just bought the car and they said I would not get the title for 6 weeks. I am crossing the 26th and all I will have is copies of my passport, FM3,drivers license, mexican car insurance, registration and sales contract. Will that be ok? Also is the zacatacas or SLP route the best?

As long as you have the other car documents you mention, you will not have a problem. Be sure that you have a valid credit card issued in the name of the owner of the car so that you can charge your temporary vehicle import fee to the credit card. Don't plan to pay cash; the credit card is what you want to use.

The route you take depends on where you're going. What's your destination?

If you financed it you will also need a letter from the lien holder granting permission to bring it into Mexico. They want to see the title because they want to see if it is a clear title.

I would never drive a brand new car to Mexico. Good luck.

Can we assume that you have a "temporary paper plate"? A friend of ours did not and they made him return to Texas to get one.

I am going to Chapala. and did not know which route was better. Also where to spend the night in SLP or Zacatecas. I will have my new plates on the car and it is a 08, just new to me

I have never made the drive from that part of Texas to Chapala, so I cannot comment on SLP. If you choose to go through Zacatecas, I would recommend:
http://www.argento-inn.com/
It is located in the heart of the "centro colonial area" and once there, you can walk to restaurants and experience this wonderful city center. We have also stayed in other locations on the outskirts of town but your options are limited. Parking at the Argento is underground with a guard and the entry door is locked at night. Accommodations are adequate but not fancy. On our last trip south from NM, we left there at around 8 or 8:15 and we were having lunch in Tonala by noon.

I haven't been to Chapala but I can tell you it's a pretty easy drive to SLP. If you go Nvo Laredo/Monterrey/Ramos Arizpe/SLP then it's 4 lane divided highway almost the whole way, much of it on cuotas. If you go Piedras Negras/Ramos/SLP it's on 57 the whole way, mostly two lane from border to Ramos then 4 lane divided highway.

If you search these forums, the two routes you are considering have been discussed many times.

"Be sure that you have a valid credit card issued in the name of the owner of the car..."

That is not exactly what the rule says. The credit or debit card must be in the name of the person applying for the permit. Usually, that will be the owner, but that is not the requirement.

For example: Husband has a permit for a car already in México. Wife applies for a permit for a car that is in his name. He is with her, so there is no problem with that. But when hes pulls out his credit/debit card, the deal if off because she must use a card in her name even though the car is in his name. I have read several cases where that was a problem. The Dawg's wife got caught in that trap a few years go.

Rolly is correcto. My wife had had to come by bus to Nuevo Laredo from Ajijic - a not insignificant journey - because they would not allow me to import the car as the record showed I had already imported one (a technical glitch). They would only allow her to import the car by physically being present at Nuevo Laredo at the time. Then, as it turned out, she brought no credit cards with her name on them even though the credit card with only my name was also her credit card account. This joint account notion is strange to Mexicans. We had to deposit a bond of the equivalent of $500USD in cash and - get this - if you use a credit card you never have to return to the border as long as you hold a valid residency visa and they never actually charge your account but if you deposit cash, you must return to the border and export the car at the same place you imported it within six months or you forfeit the deposit.

Don´t mess with this import/export process. You always lose.
