mexican rental car --> USA and back?

¡Hola a todo y a toda!
Me and a mate are planning a trip to México this October (2002), and our plan is to hire a car in Cancún and drive it up to New Mexico in the USA, then back down to Cancún (hey, we like driving! ;)
My question is, do any of you have experience / know anything about taking a Mexican car on a trip (1 week) into the USA? (insurance, papers, border crossing problems, fees, which Mexican rental companies allow entry into USA...)
Any other advice is always welcome,
cheers,
Mike & Matt

It is my understanding that you cannot take a MX rental car from MX to the U.S. I do know that you can take a car from the U.S. to MX with permission and insurance bought from the Car Rental Agency, there is also a 25 mile limit from the border zone.

Thanks for your reply, Toyodda.
Do you know what the problem is exactly? Is it the MX rental companies that don't want to let you into the USA, or the USA border control people that don't want to let in MX rental cars?

I am sure you cannot take a Mexican rental car into the US. You can drop the car at the border and rent a US car and then drop it at the border and rent a Mexican rental car to return to Cancun. Gasoline is pretty expensive as is insurance. If time and money are no problem you can pull it off.
