mexican rental car --> USA and back?

: ¡Hola a todo y a toda!
: Me and a mate are planning a trip to México this October (2002), and our plan is to hire a car in Cancún and drive it up to New Mexico in the USA, then back down to Cancún (hey, we like driving! ;)
: My question is, do any of you have experience / know anything about taking a Mexican car on a trip (1 week) into the USA? (insurance, papers, border crossing problems, fees, which Mexican rental companies allow entry into USA...)
: Any other advice is always welcome,
: cheers,
: Mike & Matt
This is a very expensive way to see Mexico. I am sure you cannot take a Mexican rental car into the US. You can drop the car at the border and rent a US car and then drop it at the border and rent a Mexican rental car to return to Cancun. Gasoline is pretty expensive as is insurance. If time and money are no problem you can pull it off.
