mazatlan to zacatecas and back

We are going from maz. to zacatecas and back. I've been reading the messages about 40 from maz to durango. It seems a bit frightening. My book says it shouldn't be done in mansoon season. We'll be there next week. Will it be doable? And do you know how long the drive between durango and zacatecas is? Any suggestions? How about around through Guadalajara? Or is that rediculous?
