Hello sweetphenil, The Mission TX-Reynosa Tam bridge is open and is an excellent place to enter Mexico. It is open from 8 to ? and has a very convenient module to get both your immigration permit and I suppose your temporary car import permit. The module is operated by a crew operating out of the Reynosa inmigración and aduanero departments, and claims to offer the same services. I have not used either one. This route bypasses Reynosa almost entirely, but like the city itself has experienced some narco related problems. The Hidalgo TX-Reynosa Tam bridge is open and is also a good place to enter Mexico. The traffic is much, much heaver than on the new Anzalduas Mission-Reynosa bridge, so I would expect that the lines at both inmigración and aduanas would be longer and perhaps take more time. The cuota from Reynosa to Monterrey is also open and without physical problems as are both the Monterrey libre and the new cuota to Ramos Arizpe where you make your choice to go via San Luis Potosí or Zacatecas. The Free Trade International Bridge just south of Harlingen is also open and the roads are good all the way to your final destination, wherever that might be. There also is no cuota charge until the by-pass around SLP. It's libre all that distance. There is much less traffic at Los Indios than at Matamoros and the same services are offered. I don't know anything about the physical condition of the old Railroad bridge or the normal bridge from Brownsville to Matamoros but nothing has been reported anywhere on the internet. As to safety on any of these routes, I can only say under present conditions, who knows? Tomorrow morning the 25th of July 2010 I will be going north from Zacatecas to Saltillo to the Monterrey periférico to Reynosa to the Anzalduas bridge in Mission and expect no physical problems anywhere along the way. Everything is reported open. But I, too, am a little uneasy about narco generated problems. Last time I went in May before hurricane , Alex I had no problems either physical or narco related in either direction. As to safety from narcotraffic problems, who knows in these times. As ever, jerezano.
