hotels in Guanajuato

Help, please!

We are currently booked into a B&B in Guanajuato and while a friend made the booking for 4 couples, she was under the impression that the rooms would be less than $77 USD per night.....not so! Plus it is at the top of the hill.

I have looked and looked and am having a hard time finding much that is not listed in USD - we live in Mexico full time -and would really like to pay less than $77 per night. We will be driving and so parking is necessary, at least nearby.

Does anyone out there have any more current experience that 2009 that I found in the archives?

Thanks so much!
Willie

Willie:

Have not personally stayed at this B & B but a number of friends have and it has very good reviews on TripAdvisor:

If you click on the "Availability Calendar", you will be taken to a booking site with more info.

Thanks so much for such a prompt reply!!! This is where we are booked but still would like to find something more central, walkable & moderate.....I try to be pretty frugal, but comfortble and safe when travelling.

Try La Abadia, they have 3 hotels, two (traditional & plaza) are easy walking to centro. www.hotelslaabadia.com

Thanks for the tip about the hotel but it is going the wrong way in price! Might have to book the honeymoon package to make it pencil out....jiji

Since we stayed at Camino Real GTO, that won't be of much help to you. From my research, Guanajuato hotels tend to be on the high side. The best I can come up with are the rankings from TripAdvisor for both hotels and B&B's:

B&B:http://www.tripadvisor.com/...lf_Coast-Hotels.html

It's a hike. A short taxi would be a better choice than a walk. Yet, it DOES have parking while hotels in el centro do not.

We have stayed at El Socavon 3 times. It was fine back then ('90s) but now, it's a good walk from Centro, and the hotel has lots of stairs. No elevator.)

We have also stayed at El Molino de Rey, but didn't like the room, as it smelled musty and the bathroom was awkward to get into.

Stayed at Hostería Del Frayle, and got a reduced rate by asking in person, not booking on the Internet. Room was fine except it overlooked the Recepcíon, where the desk clerk played a loud radio. However, he turned it down at our request.

Last year, we stayed at the small, charming Hospedería de Truco 7. However, the room was smaller than anticipated, the breakfast served at the associated Restarante Truco 7 (3 -4 blocks away) was just adequate. The Hospedería staff was very kind and helpful, though.
There was construction/renovation going on outside or room from 8-5.
I almost forgot to mention that just under our "balcony", where there was really no room to stand, was one of the stops for the nightly callejoneadas. Some may find it romantic to have student troubadours singing and playing under their window, but it disturbed our rest. The location is very good, however, as long as you don't mind climbing the steps everytime you return to your lodgings.

Of those hotels where we've stayed, I'd choose El Frayle, price aside.

If you haven't read the reviews on TripAdvisor.com, I suggest you take a look. Finding B&B for $77 USD or less is a bit of a tough one. Personally, I'm more inclined to pass up the second "B" and just go out for breakfast. That seems a better value overall, and the choices are several.

Saludos,

By the way, Willie; when is your visit to GTO? not during el Cervantino, surely?

Many thanks to all that have responded! We are planning meeting friends this weekend that will be arriving from Mazatlan but will leave on the 28th or 29th to head back to our respective homes here in Mexico.

I think we have narrowed it down to:
Mansion del Cantador
Hacienda de Cobos or maybe
Hotel Embajadoras

So far, the Cantador seems the best for us with breakfast and parking included.

Any input about those?

Thanks!
Willie

My last input; the hotel provides secure parking and breakfast is included.

We stayed at the Mansion del Cantador. I reviewed it on Trip Advisor. It was cute, not a bad location at all, but needed some work when we were there. Numerous plumbing problems, too. We stayed 2 nights and it was OK.

Late, I know, but maybe for next time. Here is a web site that I find very helpful traveling around Mexico to towns that I do not know a hotel where I will stay. The four and five star hotels should satisfy the discriminating traveler and I find the one and two star hotels to be pretty unsatisfactory, but I find most of the three star hotels very satisfactory and available at a cost saving when I am feeling thrifty.

The site is generally very up todate, not 100%, but close. I find that if I walk-up, I frequently get prices a little lower than listed here, like 10%, so the prices are normally OK. You may want to check the site based on your experience. Check a town where you know the hotels and see how they are rated and priced. FWIW, I find it very helpful when traveling to areas that I am not familliar with and I will need to find a room. I have not used it for booking on-line or for making reservations as I do not normally know exactly where I will be for the night and I just walk-up but you should be able to use it for that if you choose.

Happy travels!
