driving thru Mexico

My boyfriend and I will be driving thru Mexico from Brownsville to Cancun and then across on a car ferry to Cozumel the first week of November. We will be using the toll roads and have the Red book of maps. Neither of us speak spanish only a few words and phrases, is that a big problem? We also wanted to take the ferry from Miami or the one out of Tampa. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way for us to make reservations for it now and we leave {by plane} on the 30th of September for Cozumel for one month. Please Please, oh por va for if anyone can give us any tips please post soon. Thanks to all, this is a great site.

You're not alone in this quest to get to Cancún with the least possible exposure to Mexico.
The Red book of maps is a new one on me, unless it's the Guia Roji atlas, which is red. But the main thing is that you have an atlas. You also should get a guidebook because motels aren't as easy to find in Mexico as they are in the US and the motels outside of cities are mostly hot-pillow establishments. A guidebook will help you out here.
A guidebook will also show some of the places you're missing on the way down. Driving straight through is a blister of a job because eventually you run out of toll roads. If you're at all interested in local color and archaeology you can make a pretty good vacation trip by stopping to look around.
There's an itinerary posted at the link shown below. It's really better for people who are staying at campgrounds, but you can get some ideas from it and it has some practical information.
