Day 1: Cross the border early in the morning (5 or 6 am) for a faster time through customs and the car registration stuff. TJ to Gomez Palacio on 45 – toll road; travel time about 10 hours Over night in Gomez. Plenty of motels on the highway.
Day 2: Gomez Palacio on 40/49 toll road to the Zacatecas turn off – highway 49 Continue on from Zacatecas to Aguascalietes, then to Leon, then to Salamanca. Salamanca ( this leg is tricky) to Morelia, then to Zitácuaro on highway 15 This will be a very long day. You might want to overnight at one of the cities listed. There’ll be motels all along the way. I like to stop where the truckers stop to eat and sleep.
Please be aware that highway numbers are not very important and are not always displayed. Follow by the names of the towns along your route.
Get a map and have it handy.
Road signage in many towns and cities is poor, so be alert. If you get lost, an easy way out is to hire a taxi to lead you the highway.
This route puts you on toll roads as much as possible. They are not cheap! But they are excellent highways with not much truck and bus traffic. If you don’t want to pay the tolls, you can take the free roads that parallel the tolls, but your trip will be much slower, perhaps taking another day which may end up costing about as much as the toll roads.
