bring in a vehicle less than 10 yrs old

i honestly have to say i am very confused, so if anyone can assist me i would be most greatful. my husband and i are traveling to Guerrero state this fall. we want to take a vehicle there that we can legalize and leave with his mother at the farm. the confusing thing to me is-we were told that the vehicle had to be more than 10 yrs old to legalize it. we purchased a 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 extended cab, so that part seems to be okay, but we also have a 2001 Ford F150 Supercrew that we would were told that could be legalized as well with some sort of "frontera plate"..........does that make any sense at all? or did we do the right thing by getting the '99? help............

Wow...you've done a few things that you might wish you could undo.

First of all, neither of your vehicles meets the older-than-10-years rule. Either one would have to be model year 1998 to 1993 to qualify for nationalization under that rule, which limits nationalization to vehicles from 10 to 15 model years old.

Second, there is no window of opportunity currently open for nationalization under that rule.

Third, a "frontera plate" is only good within the franja frontera--the border zone. In order to bring a vehicle with frontera plates into the interior, you have to have a temporary import sticker just as if your vehicle had foreign license plates.

Fourth, in order to have a hope of legalizing either of your vehicles, you need to talk with someone who specializes in naturalization of vehicles--someone who has a business of that kind at the border, not in the interior. It's possible that someone who does that kind of business could help you, but you will pay a hefty price in fees and taxes.

Sorry not to have better news...and of course the worst news is that you may not be able to legalize either of your vehicles.

thanks for your reply..........we are really not that concerned about the F150, we have a home & farm we will be keeping here in the u.s. and the that truck will be just fine here. i also think the 1999 will be fine, according to what we were told at the consulate, if it is introduced after Nov. 1st, since then it will be 10 yrs old. my husband can legalize it because he has dual citizenship. i guess i was most curious about the "chisme" over the frontera plate...........thanks!

I'm seeing a lot of Mexicans driving US plated cars. I wish I had dual citizenship (insert dream-sigh here).

Cindy, be cautious about information that you receive from a Mexican consulate. Consulates are frequently known to give information that is contrary to what the facts are when you're actually at the border.

Your husband's Mexican citizenship, for example, is no guarantee that either of your vehicles can be legalized.

I have a ten year old car that I thinking of bringing to Mexico and leaving it there, under my FM-3. I have been told that the most straightforward and cheapest thing I could do is to get my impprtation sticker at the border and just keep driving it with its Ontario plates; that the Police don't care if my registration sticker is up to date. If this is so why should I care about nationalizing it?

we want to keep the older truck there permanently because of the fact we will have what we need as we go back and forth to our property and start building our house, etc. and since my last post on this-i stand corrected-the ford ranger 4x4 we bought is a '98...............sorry for the unintentioned mis-info in any of my previous posts.
