any GPS experts for Mexico???

Can't Post | Private Reply
After many years of driving all over Mexico with paper maps I have decided to purchase a GPS for my auto, my problem is there are thousands of GPS devices on the market but few maps of the whole country of Mexico ( Cabo to Cancun) ...I believe I have the make and model of GPS ( Garmin 255w ) I will buy but what map could I get that is similar to maps of the USA and Canada? Thanks in advance & I probably cross post on the General Forum, Rick

For folks who own an IPhone, there is a really good GPS map which includes US, Canada and Mexico. There is a lot of competition but Sygic is the only IPhone app of which I am aware that includes Mexico. While it gives street address information for US and Canada, Mexico has instructions which take drivers to the specified colonia within cities. It doesn't for example give a street address in SMA but will give excellent directions to the neighborhood where it is located. That's close enough for me for the time being. It costs $80 and eliminates the need for a stand alone GPS device in the car.

By later today, we will have completed a just under 4000 mile two week roundtrip from Albuquerque, NM. Been using a GARMIN 785T with the latest MX card. Plan to report on the good and the bad of using this unit sometime next week.

Chimnagringo - Looking forward to the comments on the MX card for the Garmin. I have an older model eTrex and I'm not sure if it is worth an update-or not. Curious of the results. They are sure great for hiking here in the Northwest. Thanks in advance.

I am wanting to put the Mexico map into my GPS for my trip south in a few weeks. The only info I can find is for the maps for $50. However, someone told me you could somehow download off of the computer. I would prefer as opposed to the $50. Thanks in advance for any help, Norma

Norma - I've not heard of any free maps - you can download after you have paid for it. It would be wonderful to be wrong in this case.

Norma

I'm assuming you want a road map. I believe the USGS offers topographical mapping in the US at no charge - maybe that is what you had heard.

But this would not help you for a road trip.

good luck

Have a look at Rollies Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010

This will allow a "very" big screen, your laptop or smaller notebook, only 10".
