You can buy pesos at a US bank at the border or in any of the several exchange shops - Casa de Cambio -- but you are not likely to get a good exchange rate on the US side of the border
Don't bring much cash. Bring your ATM card. You can use it at any bank in Mexico to get pesos and usually get a better exchange rate than at a Casa de Cambio or in the US.
Travelers checks can be hard to cash outside of the cities. In your ranch destination, you'll probably have a hard time with checks.

It is amazing to me how few people say "thanks." You're one of the good ones, Lisa!

If everyone said thanks

in email .. it would double the internet (or responded negatively). I would invest in a storage company (NTAP, Network Appliance). In person 'thank you's' are another thing .. and welcome.

I was given some advice here last year and it worked fine. I stopped at a few grocery stores just north of the border (Nogales) and one of them had plenty of pesos, so I got a hundred dollars worth, which worked fine until I got to an ATM machine a few hours south of the border.
