alto v. alto total

I love this: stop signs in Mexico. Some simply say ALTO, others say ALTO TOTAL. I asked a Mexican friend, what's up with this? He explained that ALTO is sort of a suggetion that you stop (my daughter also believes this, apparently, she lived many years in Ecuador), but ALTO TOTAL means you really, really, have to come to a full stop, or else. Is this fair warning, or what? Talk about a sense of fair play. I love it!
