Bill,
Route 186 is a perfectly good road. There are a few spots however, that could use a little fixing. A good portion of 186 is 1 1/2 lanes wide. The only problem with the road is when it's raining and your on one of the bad portions of the road, but like I said there aren't too many bad spots. The one important thing that you might want to keep in mind is that the vast majority of Mexican roads clearly identify upcoming "Topes" (Spanish for car destroyer) - except for 186. BE CAREFUL on this road - beware of speed bumps that are not marked. When you get to the end of 186 you'll see a big sign saying Cancun to the left and Chetumal to the right. Follow the signs to Chetumal. When you get to the outskits of Chedumal you'll see another sign pointing towards the Belizean boarder. The sign will direct you around a traffic circle, but just beyond the circle (a few hundred feet) you'll see a gas station. Before you cross the boarder fill up - gas is very expensive in Belize.
As far as the Belizean boarder there won't be any problem. Vertually all the major highways in Belize are paved except for most of the Southern Highway and Shore Road. If you intend to drive off road, however, especially during the rainy season, do so in a strudy four wheel drive vehicle or a VW beetle. The Belizean jungles are beautiful.
Have fun,
Anthony
: Can someone tell me if the road that runs south from 186 when your heading towards Chetumal is paved or not? It's the road that runs south along the Belize border from Ucum to La Union. Also, if it's possible to cross the river there at La Union over to Blue Creek Village in Belize in a vehicle? Any help is greatly appreciated.
