Which is the best road to Zihuatanejo

Can't Post |
Hi, I will go to Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa at the end of the year for 3 month, in car with a small sailboat on trailer(21 feet)from Quebec Canada to Zihuatanejo 5600km. I have 2 projects roads in Mexico...
The first is: Brownsville TX to... Matamoros by(180-101) to Ciudad Victoria by(85)to MEXICO by(95d)to Acapulco by(200)to Zihua.
The second : Laredo TX to...Nuevo Laredo (85) Monterrey (54) Guadalajara (54) Colima Tecoman (200) Zihua.
What are you thinking about these two choices ???
All ideas are welcome
Thank you,
Vito

A third possibility is to head to Morelia Michoacan, then to Patzcuaro, and then down to the coast on the "new" tollroad through Uruapan.
The road north and south of Zihua along the coast is narrow and winding with frequent ascents and descents over top of headlands. I've driven this road a number of times towing a really long trailer and after a short five hour day I'm ready to park somewhere and nurse a bottle of rotgut Tequila to numb the terror (and I don't drink).

Saludos!

On Hry. 57, once you reach Queretaro, turn east to Celaya. From Celaya, proceed south to Morelia.
From Morelia, proceed to Patzcuaro, Uruapan, Nueva Italia, and on as far as the not-yet-completed cuota to Playa Azul will take you. At Playa Azul, turn south to Lazaro Cardenas and on to Zihuatanejo.

: Vito
Best is a relative term. Either/any route is going to involve major inclines and twisty roads.
Route #2 (MX-85 and DF) is probably the worst choice, but only marginally. MX-200 west of Zihuat ain't no bed of roses either!! I trust that your tow vehicle has lots of power and is in superb condition.
Personally, I'd suggest Laredo,Monterey, MX-57 to the DF, MX-95 to Acapulco then west up the coast to Z. Probably the easiest drive and the worst TOLLS!!

Here is my suggestion:
Laredo - Monterrey - Saltillo. Then south on No. 57 heading towards Mexico City. At Querétaro, take No. 45 west. At Salamanca, take No. 43 south to Morelia. Then down to the Pacific (Patzcuaro, Uruapan, Playa Azul. You are now only a couple of hours away from Zihua on a flat road.
Please realize that toll roads(CUOTA)are very expensive, especially with a trailer. (Les péages sont très chers, mais ça vaut la peine quandmême.)
Bonne route !

DF and Toluca, even if it meant towing the sailboat with a donkey part way! I've gone both ways, I prefer the GDL- Colima- then south route. Lazaro Cardenas to Troncones is always under construction it seems like. I did it at night in a Nissan Pathfinder with big tires and lots of lights. It was slow going.

Travelers to Mexico
should exercise caution when traveling on all highways in Mexico. Of specific concern are Highway 190
(Tuxtla to Tapachula,) Highway 195 (Tuxtla to Villahermosa,) Highway 186 (Chetumal to Villahermosa,)
Highway 15 (Sinaloa) and Express Highway 1 (Sinaloa). These highways have recently seen particularly high
levels of criminal assaults and robberies. In addition, the Embassy recommends avoiding the highway from
Altamirano to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, where a number of serious assaults have recently occurred. The U.S.
Embassy advises its personnel to exercise extreme caution and not to travel on Mexican highways after dark
for safety reasons.
