What can I take into Mexico?

Can't Post |
I was reading on the Sanborn's insurance site about what is allowed to be brought into Mexico. It says if you have over $50 per person (travelling by land) it must be declared. I was planning on travelling with a lot of stuff since I will be in Guadalajara for a year. Do I really have to declare everything? I hope this question isn't too stupid but it seems a little ridiculous to me to only be allowed $50.
Also, how much are the duties?
Any help is appreciated!

If you'll go to the site linked below, you'll find a description of what's allowed and how duty is calculated.
If you have an FM-3, you can apply for the menaje de casa which permits a one-time duty-free importation of your personal effects and worldly possessions.

Of course, you don't have to declare things like your (used) clothing, a camera with some film, even a laptop - i.e., personal belongings you may be planning to use on a short trip. Neither do books count, since they are completely duty-free. But if you are carrying anything brand new, gifts for friends (other than books), or comercial (large) quantities of most things - i.e., things you could leave/sell in Mexico for others to use (or for you to settle in the country) - these things should be declared if above the limit. Also some types of food have to be declared (because of agricultural regulations) and some may be prohibited (a pack of you favorite tea is OK). This is a general rule for crossing borders, whether Mexican or not. Be sensible, don't worry about an extra shampoo bottle - nobody would care (unless you are taking enough to supply a market stall). Mexican customs website should have the details, if you care.
