At our typical crossing point (Santa Teresa, NM) - there is a pullout lane where one pulls up to a small building. The official scans your tag with an optical scanner from inside the building and then steps out with a razor blade in hand to remove the sticker. After doing so, they provide you with a receipt indicating that your sticker had been turned in.

Wherever you cross, DO NOT cross over without having this procedure done or Mexico will consider your vehicle to be still in Mexico and will not allow you to bring in another vehicle since you still have one in country.

Hello we are leaving Mexico and would like to know if we have to leave our tags? We have a FM3 and will not be retuning by car. ever. Can we just go threw the boarder and just keep the tags and remove them at home? We have had different people tell us different things. need your expert advise. :) thanks

When you say "tags", do you mean the importation sticker or Mexican "tags" or, in the American vernacular, license plates on a car bought in Mexico. If you are speaking of the importation sticker and you never plan to return, bye-bye, but it is no big deal to have the importation sticker removed at the border so what´s the big deal? It takes a few minutes at most to "export" the car so why not do so?
