Volkswagen lovers/haters-HELP!

The saga continues. After over a year of sporadic research I have finally started looking at actual cars...I am spooked by the lack of clearance under the front end on Nissan and Honda vehicles...I will be driving a lot of dirt roads in Oaxaca...(though for long drives i will take toll roads)I am now investigating Volkswagens, specifically small wagons from 1990-1992. Any love stories out there? Hate stories? Post or write me directly. Muchisimas Gracias

Clearance is not a major issue on the dirt roads in most of Mexico including the Oaxaca area unless you are somewhere you shouldn't be in a car or light truck. Most of the dirt roads are driven by locals in 2wd vehicles without much ground clearance. The trick is to drive at a sane speed and keep your eyes open for the rare obstacle which will require though and patience to get around. What is more important is a vehicle that is in great repair, good to excellent mechanical condition, and for which parts can be easily found in that part of Mexico.
The saga continues. Tom has good point about judgement. But clearance is an issue. I think many cars sold in Oaxaca and Chiapas are stock with raised clearance compared with Mexico City. I've got 12 years here (and 6 years before that in middle east) driving dirt roads. Clearance matters -- NOT as much as judgement, but it matters. Forget the Honda. Some Tsurus have good clearance. VW bus widely, cheaply repaired.
