Visiting Michoacan - Staying in Patzcuaro

We have a guest from the United States who is shopping around Jalisco and Michoacan for furniture and art objects for his new Florida home and I know I should search the forums for this information but got 180 responses over the past three years or more when I typed in Patzcuaro so wondered if any of you have recommendations on hotels in or near the plaza in that city and have recommendations on restaurants including those featuring regional specialty foods as well. We have been to Patzcuaro several times so know the town fairly well but our friend has never been to Mexico before and would especially love to try some Michoacan regional foods. As for the recommended lodging, price is less important than charm.

Check out www.mesondesanantonio.com. We stayed there a year or so ago and it was beautiful--near the Basilica.

As for the recommended lodging, price is less important than charm.

There are many nice places around and between the plazas of Pátzcuaro. Have them walk around checking out the hotels and look at some of the rooms to see what appeals. It's a nice way to get a feel for the place.

Suggest they try the platter of enchiladas in front of the mercado in the corner of plaza chica. One platter can feed a whole family; if they're a couple suggest they share a platter.

How could the Dawg send his distinguished guests out to such a boring state as Michoacán?

As a followup to the recommendation on Meson de San Antonio - it is one of our favorite hotels in all of MX having stayed there a total of 9 nights spread over 3 visits. A slideshow of this fine hotel:

In and around Patzcuaro, there are numerous possible sources for what they make be looking for:

1) There are a fair number of furniture stores in Patzcuaro proper. Just depends on their tastes.
2) Carved wood furniture (mostly pine but other species too) - San Francisco Pichataro (30 kms from Patzcuaro) and Tzintzuntzan (much closer). Both towns have numerous shops along the main highway with moderate selections. The first slideshow from San Francisco Pichataro shows a set of furniture (chair, loveseat, sof & table). We stopped to inquire of the price of the chair - $2600MXP but after further discussion, that was the price of the set.

Tzintzuntzan is known for wood carving and probably more so for their straw Christmas decorations:

3) Capula - just off the highway between Quiroga and Morelia is a worthwhile stop for pottery;

4) Santa Clara del Cobre - for anything copper related, this is the town to visit!

Restaurant Cha Cha Cha is closed.

We generally prefer the Gran Hotel or La Surtidora, mostly for their breakfasts, but our top favorite lunch restaurant is Mariscos La Güera, in Pátzcuaro at the intersection of Calle Federico Tena and Libramiento, or at the newer and larger "Campestre" location on the highway to Morelia, at Km. 44.6, at Colonia Nueva. Both open about noon and close by 6 p.m.

IMO, the best restaurant breakfast in Pátzcuaro is at Fonda Mamá Lupe, on Calle Benito Mendoza, across from Bancomer. The only negatives are the uncomfortable woven chair seats and the weak coffee. The food is excellent and inexpensive.

Cuanajo, about 20 minutes east of Pátzcuaro is another town noted for wooden furniture.

I have little to say about lodgings, as we live nearby and have only stayed in one Pátzcuaro hotel, La Posada de La Salud, which is clean but basic. We know the owners of Mesón de San Antonio, but have never stayed there. It is a lovely place.

Thank you for the clarification on Cha Cha Cha. We only ate there two times on previous trips and while not jump up and down great, we did enjoy our meals.

We will file away your comments on the other restaurants and made a point of visiting them on future trips to Patzcuaro.

Not sure exactly why Meson de San Antonio has become a real favorite of ours other than maybe its relaxing atmosphere, nice owners and we simply feel comfortable there. During our most recent five day stay in August, we happened to return to the room to drop off a few things during the day and the maids were in the process of cleaning. Kathy could not believe their thoroughness in scrubbing down the shower and bathroom when she went in. We do enjoy the location since it is quiet and like the evening walk down the hill to a restaurant and the casual walk back up to our room.

I had forgotten to mention Cuanajo, as it was on our list of places to visit the last trip but we ran out of time and never made it there. We had a very aggressive plan for our last trip but in reality, it turned out to be too aggressive. We just enjoyed ourselves too much with the areas we did visit. That is why there will be future trips.

When we visited Patzcuaro, we stayed at the Posada San Rafael, right on the main Plaza Quiroga. Price was around $40.00/night USD. Very nice, except that--when we were there in Spring 2008--you couldn't get hot water in the early morning hours. If you are an early riser, you may want to shower a little later than you are used to.
