Traveling to US

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am planning on leaving San Miguel de Allende and driving back to the US the second week of June. I am a woman and this will be the first time I have done the drive by myself. I am a little nervous after reading about all the new carjackings and heightened security advisories. I know to take a lot of the things I hear with a grain of salt because stuff really does get blown out of proportion but it is still a little unsettling.
That said, I am planning on taking 57 all the way up and doing the Ciudad Acuna/Del Rio crossing. I will probably be stopping for the night in Saltillo, I will not take the bypass around Monclova but will go through town. Can anyone add any words of wisdom that will help me make the trip safe and uneventful?

I made a similar trip at the end of March. No problems. 57 is a great road. I, too, went through the middle of Monclova (Blvd. Pape) mid-day and it was just fine (other than there are a ton of signal lights NOT coordinated). The only thing I did differently than you was to exit 'sooner' at Piedras Negras/Eagle Pass (a breeze) and then drove up US Hiway 277 to Del Rio. Just my choice and I have no knowledge that Cuidad Acuna/Del Rio crossing is better or worse.

I assume you have a motel in Saltillo picked out. There are none 'out on the toll road' and one has to exit west into town. I did and easily found a motel as I got closer to downtown. Left the next morning, expecting to have major traffic getting out up towards Ramos Arizpe, but it was not a problem at all as that road is multiple lanes wide. 57 from there is straight and great!

Have a good trip.

Monclova is only 2.5 hours (or less) north of Saltillo and I would think is an easy day's drive from SMA. There are many hotel options as you pass through town. Very upscale are the Four Seasons Sheraton and Fiesta Inn, both located on Blvd. Pape. A better choice if you are just passing through and want something under $50 is the Ludivina which is two blocks off Pape on Blvd. Benito Juarez y Veracruz No. 600. You simply make a left off Pape on Benito Juarez and the Ludivina is on the right.

The decision about where to cross ( Del Rio or Eagle Pass)would depend on whether you are heading east or west after you cross the border. If you are going east to IH 35 and then north through San Antonio, cross at Eagle Pass.

Those contemplating crossing at Laredo should be aware of the following situation which is being reported by the local police department. The embedded video contains a bit more information than does the accompanying text.

This report out today about the crossing at Eagle Pass:

These were a sample of many posts on a message board utilized by Piedras Negras citizens as applause and appreciation was showered on the military by the population of this border city after a series of gunfights late Wednesday morning between the Mexican army and drug cartel gunmen in at least 2 locations

Piedras Negras, a city of 200,000 people is located across the Rio Grande from Eagle Pass, Texas. There has been a long simmering discord among the citizens over the ineptness and perceived co-optation of the local municipal police forces and the administration of this city by drug cartels. This state of affairs has allowed the criminals to act with relative impunity.

This drug trafficking corridor, or “plaza” has recently been in flux as members of the Zeta and Golfo/Sinaloa cartels have fought for ownership of this territory. The disappearances of up to 40people connected to organized crime, several shootouts between competing criminal gangs, and the increasing lawlessness associated with extortions and robberies of businesses and citizens has resulted in a high level of insecurity.

On Wednesday, around 10:30 AM, there was a confrontation between gunmen in a white Suburban suv and elements of the military in the “Laguito Mexicano” area of the city. The confrontation continued outside the “Las Barrocas” restaurant a short distance away.

Witnesses who were caught in the crossfire at both locations spoke of the military’s restraint in the confrontations so as to minimize the risk to civilians on the streets. One witness stated that the military only returned fire at the first location after taking casualties from the reckless fusillade of the gunmen.

The citizens also voiced their disdain for the local police who endangered innocent lives by failing to take any measures in blocking traffic into the areas under fire. A chaotic situation arose in the city until the military effectively took control.

Military roadblocks were in effect throughout Piedras Negras throughout the day and evening and all traffic leaving the city was blocked until the early evening.

The casualties as of early Wednesday evening were 1 soldier dead and 1 soldier gravely injured and in intensive care in the local IMSS hospital. 3 gunmen were injured in the altercation, 1 of them in serious condition. 8 other gunmen were captured and were being held in the military garrison.

After the shootings the 2 international bridges on the border with Eagle Pass, Tx were put on full alert on both the Mexican and U.S. sides to prevent the escape of any gunmen into Eagle Pass. In Eagle Pass, the traffic on the bridges was briefly halted as well armed I.C.E., Border Patrol and Sheriff’s Deputies provided security.

In a related event that may signify a new aggressive policy of confronting drug trafficking gangs in the area by the military, the command of the Mexican army detachment in Piedras Negras was transferred to brigadier general Alejandro Pinacho Lopez on Monday of this week.

General Lopez previously served as an advisor and military attaché in the Republic of Nicaragua.

I live in Nuevo Laredo, cross back and forth daily and this is the first I have heard about systematic carjackings near the downtown bridges. The report is a little sketchy about when and where this is occurring, not surprising considering the source (Pro 8 News in Laredo), but what the report describes would have to be happening at the old bridge (Bridge I) and only for vehicles entering Mexico. It is about a four block drive from Bridge II to the Coloso Loop and there are only three intersecting streets, so I don't buy the idea of organized gangs blocking off the streets in that area and forcibly removing drivers and passengers.

I also don't see it happening during the day at Bridge I. Anyone familiar with the bridge area in downtown NL knows what the traffic situation is like. Plus there is a heavy Army presence around Bridge I and cartel gangs avoid them. Carjackings usually occur in isolated areas. Cars are forcibly stolen in NL but not on streets or roads that gringos in transit would be using or at times they would be traveling.

The officer who was interviewed indicated that victims were reporting the crimes after crossing into the United States for insurance purposes. He specifically stated that there is little his department can do about crimes committed in a foreign country. I have no idea about the credibility of the Laredo, TX police department nor the local network affiliate. The officer did say that they are providing this information to make the public aware of what is happening to some owners of newer vehicles who cross into Mexico at the Laredo point of entry.

The LPD officer did not say or imply in any way the vehicles were stolen while the victims were on their way back to the US. He said they were reporting the thefts to the Laredo P.D. for insurance purposes. He said the thefts were occuring far from the bridge(s) at blocked off intersections inside the city. That description alone eliminates Bridge II for the reasons I stated earlier.

Obviously the LPD officer is talking about vehicles entering Mexico when he mentions spotters targeting vehicles. How would a spotter located some distance from the bridge know where any particular vehicle was headed if they are targeting vehicles headed back to the US. If the spotters are located near the bridge there simply isn't time or space enough for masked men to intercept them. For inbound Mexican traffic how would a spotter near the bridge know the route any particular vehicle would take after entering Mexico in order to alert carjackers and allow them to intercept the drivers at some location far from the bridge.

No doubt the Zetas are stealing/carjacking vehicles to replenish those they are losing in their struggle with the Army. I suspect the stolen vehicles in the report belong to border residents who cross back and forth frequently and may have extended auto theft coverage for the Mexican border zone. That would explain why they are being reported to the Laredo Police Department. While there have been reports of vehicles of gringos in transit being stolen at narco retens in other parts of Tamaulipas and in Nuevo Leon, I do not think the thefts in Pro 8 news story involve gringos returning to the US.

Thanks for the responses so far. Sounds like they are starting to have a problem at Piedras Negras/Eagle Pass so I will stick with Ciudad Acuna/Del Rio, so far I have not heard of any problems at that crossing. I will not be going anywhere near Nuevo Laredo/Laredo so if anyone has anything else they can share on the trip up MX57 from Queretaro and the Ciudad Acuna/Del Rio crossing, I would really appreciate it. This is not something I look forward to doing on my own but my life has taken a left turn and this is where I am at this point. As the song goes, la la la la life goes on!! Thanks for any help.
