Travel through Mexico in truck camper

I'm planning a trip from Canada to Panama and my wife is concerned about my safety as I drive through Mexico. Is there anyone out there that is familiar with a safe route? Also if there is a group planning a simmilar trip that would welcome starting a convoy. I would like to go in Jan-Feb 2012.

Rene, travel in Mexico is a much talked about subject these days. This forum has a Search function where you can read previous posts about it. Up at the top of the page you are on, click on "Search Posts"; in the window that comes up, type something like "Border Crossing" into the 'Search String' and then click on Search. You will then get all previous posts that had that subject mentioned. Be watchful as some of the postings will be old and you will want to look at only the ones lately... say 2011.

In general 'tho, travel in Mexico is OK (my opinion) if you use common sense. Mathematically speaking you are WAY more likely to have a car wreck than be involved in some kind of drug cartel situation. There may be a couple of areas that you may not want to go through and the posts you look at will talk about some of them. I suspect that, if you are going to drive from Canada to Panama, you are not a novice driver! If it were me I'd have me a good map of Mexico. My favorite is the Guia Roji, Por las carreteras de Mexico 2011. Not real cheap but neither is getting way off track in a strange country. Most people warn against driving at night..... not because of 'bandits' but more because of stray animals on the road or bad drivers. Assuming that your goal is traversing Mexico and not visiting several places, you have the opportunity to use mostly toll roads (cuotas). They are rather expensive but one can surely make great time. Otherwise, most free roads (libre) will take you a very, very long time and will go through the heart of every little village, town and city (with absolutely no signage to help you get from one side out the other!). Cuotas generally bypass smaller populated towns (as do freeways in the US and I presume Canada).

Good luck on your trip.

There was a link published to a map showing the official numbers of murders and murder rates for the past 20 years for every municipality in Mexico: http://stanford.edu/~dkronick/mexico_crime/ Based on the color intensities of the border municipalities, you might consider the Eagle Pass crossing and Piedras Negras - Monclova - Saltillo route south.

General advice: There are good interstate highways through the USA to San Antonio. San Antonio has the beautiful riverwalk, making it a nice place to stop. Many people report that it is good to make your border crossing early in the day. A US border patrol agent told us to NOT stop for the night in the towns north of Laredo Texas, because the middle of the night crime levels against travelers are higher there than in points south of the border, and the hotels in these towns are generally fully booked by oil-patch worker. After an early morning border crossing, you could consider routes that avoid Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey, and make your way to Queretaro and Arco Norte (which by-passes the very challenging Mexico City driving).

Altahabana seems to track official and unofficial reports of violence along various routes through the border states, so, in addition to reading pertinent Mexconnect threads, you might send Altahabana a PM, requesting his latest advice.

The map might also give you a sense of what areas have low murder rates for trip planning throughout Mexico.

Now here is a guy that you want to get hold of to answer this question for you. He has been all over this country called Mexico in his older truck and a self contained camper on the bed of it. If anyone can tell you the ins and outs of camper travel through the roads and back roads of this country I would suspect he might be able to help you. His name on here is "Playaboy". I know he is for real as he spent some time at our fracc for a few nights and was very interesting to speak with.

Hope this might help you in your decisions.

I have been running around in my TC for 5 years. I have been lucky (smart) and have never run into trouble. Choose a route you would like to take and then pay attention to the news for any trouble in the areas you plan to be in. Be flexible once you are the road.

Take spare filters, belts, hoses and other parts that might be difficult to get here for your truck.

Follow Ricks advice about the maps and roads. I find Altahabana input to be right on. Another book that is a must is "Mexican Camping" by Mike and Terri Church. It is the bible for camping in Mexico with loads of information.

Also do a search in mexconnect (search box at top of page) for Mexican Camping and you will find more info about camping and about the Church's excellent book.

You may want to be aware that as of recent, a number of really intelligent Gringos have been busted for transporting large quantities of drugs in various types of RV's. Some busts have been well publicized and others with lesser amounts have flown under the radar. While I am sure you are on the up and up, you may want to be prepared for additional scrutiny at checkpoints. Not a big deal other than slowing you down a bit. The guys manning the checkpoints have always been courteous to us and they are just doing their job.

What type of camper did you use?
I'm using a pop up, any problem with those?
Maybe you would also know if internet is available via WiFi in most part of the country.

I travel around Mexico In Truck camper. No problems, just know your height. Low trees are an issue. You may want to try & find someone else to travel with at Mexico RV Buddies
