Rene, travel in Mexico is a much talked about subject these days. This forum has a Search function where you can read previous posts about it. Up at the top of the page you are on, click on "Search Posts"; in the window that comes up, type something like "Border Crossing" into the 'Search String' and then click on Search. You will then get all previous posts that had that subject mentioned. Be watchful as some of the postings will be old and you will want to look at only the ones lately... say 2011. In general 'tho, travel in Mexico is OK (my opinion) if you use common sense. Mathematically speaking you are WAY more likely to have a car wreck than be involved in some kind of drug cartel situation. There may be a couple of areas that you may not want to go through and the posts you look at will talk about some of them. I suspect that, if you are going to drive from Canada to Panama, you are not a novice driver! If it were me I'd have me a good map of Mexico. My favorite is the Guia Roji, Por las carreteras de Mexico 2011. Not real cheap but neither is getting way off track in a strange country. Most people warn against driving at night..... not because of 'bandits' but more because of stray animals on the road or bad drivers. Assuming that your goal is traversing Mexico and not visiting several places, you have the opportunity to use mostly toll roads (cuotas). They are rather expensive but one can surely make great time. Otherwise, most free roads (libre) will take you a very, very long time and will go through the heart of every little village, town and city (with absolutely no signage to help you get from one side out the other!). Cuotas generally bypass smaller populated towns (as do freeways in the US and I presume Canada). Good luck on your trip.
