Towing boat from Durango to Mazatlan

Can't Post |
I am planning on towing a 20' bassboat to lake El Salto next spring. I would cross the border at Laredo and drive the toll roads to Durango. After reading the posts about the "Devil's backbone" I am not so sure if that's the way to go. I crossed @ Nogales this spring at about 3:00 am and was in La Cruz by 4:00 pm. The route through Durango would save about 700 miles each way, but I'm a little paranoid about the mountains. Also I've read that the toll booths only take Pesos now, not dollars. Is there any truth to that? ANy advice would be greatly appreciated...Cmack

The toll booths used to take dollars but they are always changing. I'd take pesos to be on the safe side. Besides, the exchange rate was really bad.
The road from Durango over the mtns. is winding and should be done in the DAY ONLY. But it's not worth going 700 miles extra just to bypass the drive.

I just drove from laredo to mazatlan yesterday. I did not like the trip through the mountians. I am not going back the same way, I would rather take make the extra miles throgh az. I hate the way people drive down here. I can handle the animals (donkeys, pigs, dogs, chickens, and cattle) but don't like the trackor trailer that take both lanes to take the curves. It's really up to you which way you decide to go but keep in mind on the mountians most parts do not have gardrails so one wrong move and your off the mountian.

There is almost nowhere to stop in the middle. I would start in Durango as early as possible. The only place where There might be a motel between Durango and Mazatlan is a small town called El Salto if memory serves me correct.
Make sure that your boat doesn't drift into the other lane and get whacked by a vehicle heading the opposite direction.
The drive is beautiful but very long and takes patience, caution, and someone watching over you.
Brian

It is no problem pulling trailer from Durango to Mazatlan. I do it once a year with a 22 foot pull trailer behind me, take it slow it takes me 7 hours. Ken
