Tourist with vehicle

Three friends and I recently did a ten day tour in Baja California and Baja California Sur on our own motorcycles. Upon crossing the border we were only asked to show proof of Mexican insurance. Our trip was confined to Baja except for crossing back in San Luis Rio Colorado. My question is, would it have been permissible to ferry the bikes to Mazatlan and return via the mainland?

On our next trip we will be including the Durango / Copper Canyon area.

At the ferry dock in La Paz is an immigration office, you would need to purchase a temp.vehicle import permit, an FMM (tourist card) and leave a deposit for the moto...

Bye the way sometime this year the new road from Mazatlan to Durango is to be completed, with all the traffic on the new road it would be perfect for your group to do the Devils Backbone........

From what I have already read and from your response, I assume no permit is needed for Baja but one is required for the mainland south of the border areas. Is this correct?

Yes the TIP or Temp. Import Permit is for all Mexico except Baja and the state of Sonora, Mazatlan is in the state of Sinaloa...hence you need permits to get on the ferry........
