Tourist auto insurance and Fm3

Can't Post |
I have been getting confusing information concerning the use of "tourist" auto insurance while I am in Baja with an FM3. We lease property in the San Felipe area and the local immigration office has advised all that an FM3 is required even if you are only there a limited time. I have asked a couple of carriers about an FM3 and "tourist auto insurance" and have been told as long as you are a resident in the US and don't spend full time there it is acceptable as long as you buy one that covers enough days.
Any facts or knowledge on the subject?

Ron, if you go down to San Felipe very often, you may find it is cheaper to buy an annual policy rather than several short-terms which tend to be rather high priced. Check with Lloyd's and others to find your best deal.

Ron,
I use Commercial Seguros America. Until I received my FM3 down here (I am a local, not expat), I was on the 180 days tourist insurance. As soon as I got my FM3, I informed them of the change, and they made my new policy for a full year. However, there was a delay of about a month between the time I received my FM3, and the time I told the insurance company, as the insurance company also need to see that I had changed my vehicle importation permit from a 180 day tourist permit to a full year FM3 permit. No problems.
Moreover, when I signed up for my tourist auto insurance, I used the Mexican address of my apartment, and they did not even wink an eye.
