Planning an RV trip to tour Mexico this winter intending to gain a general appreciation of the country and find a good wintering spot with rental accommodation. My Spanish, however, is barely beyond salutations and while I will work on that, it will likely be minimal. Will my lack of Spanish be a significant problem? Does anyone have a similar experience?

We have spent two weeks in the Puerto Vallarta area but wish to drive and see more of Mexico.

Leslie, a smile along with a "muchas gracias" is by far the most important communication you can offer. The simple act of showing respect will say legions about your character. Mexicans will help you with your Spanish, and a simple question like "Como se dice?" (how does it say?)is all you need at first. If you are willing to learn, the Mexicans will be more than tolerant of fractured and imperfect espanol.
I cannot tell uou of the number of times that I have been in a group, where the person whom spoke fluent spanish was usurped by a newcomer, simply because the newcomer was beaming with smiles and laughter.
