Torn between 2 countries - with questions

Can't Post |
I am planning a drive to Queretaro in the next month with my 2 kids and my Mexican husband. I have taken a leave of absence from work instead of just quitting and making the leap of faith - and though I would like to take quite a bit of stuff in our van, I am sort of waiting to see how it all works out and plan on applying for resident status (using the fact that my husband is a MX citizen) once I am there.
My questions (finally) are:
1) Does it matter in whose name the import permit for the vehicle is? Both of our names are on the title and registration of the vehicle, but would it be better to have HIS name on things?
2) Could my husband bring more 'household' items in as a returning citizen (with over 2 years in the US and a US green card)?
3) Anyone know if the "Paisano" program is a year-round thing? Or is it just during the temporada vacacional de Diciembre when most MX nationals return home for the holidays?
¡Gracias de antemano!

: 1) Does it matter in whose name the import permit for the vehicle is? Both of our names are on the title and registration of the vehicle, but would it be better to have HIS name on things?
As a Mexican national, he cannot have his name on a US plated car's papers. It'll have to be in your name. If you are going on an FMT, you and the car will be permitted for only 180 days. You can return to the border and get another FMT for another 180 days, BUT your car is allowed only one 180 day visit per year. So you need to get your FM3 within your first 180 days, so you can keep the car there. Also, as a Mexican, he cannot drive the car unless you are in the car with him, but as your husband, he can. Welcome to Mexico. Be sure he has papers proving that he is your husband. Talk with the Mexican consulate about this. The Mexican authorities are very gung-ho on these car things.
: 2) Could my husband bring more 'household' items in as a returning citizen (with over 2 years in the US and a US green card)?
Yes, he can bring everything, but there is a paperwork requirement. See your area Mexican consulate.
: 3) Anyone know if the "Paisano" program is a year-round thing? Or is it just during the temporada vacacional de Diciembre when most MX nationals return home for the holidays?
My understanding that this is a Christmas time thing.
Good Luck with your new advanture.

Mexicans that are legal residents with more than 1 year in the US can bring in a car on a temporary permit for a maximum of 6 months. If the car is going to stay down here then of course it needs to be in the name of a FM3 holder.
: As a Mexican national, he cannot have his name on a US plated car's papers.

And for more, go to the link below. It's a great resource for Mexicans and non-Mexicans alike.

Thanks for the info, Rolly and Brad. We've been in contact with the Mexican Consulate here in Portland (OR) preparing our list(s) for the big move!

: SCREW THE USA, I just got ousted of va great career due to Anti-Terrorist laws and my family and I are out of here! IT'S the U.S. version of the KGB, no "DUE PROCESS" as guaranteed by the CONSTITUTION and "Ex Post Facto" laws which are prohibited. Never been to Mexico, but anywhere but Stalin, USA!
