: What is the best route to take?
Cross at Laredo Texas, take mex 85 to Monterrey, then Mex 57 thru Matehuala (La Palmas restaurant on this hwy is very good & low priced. Continue on 57 to San Luis Potosi to San Luis de la Paz and pick up Mex 110 west thru Dolores Hidalgo and another 20 minutes to San Miguel. This route has plety of gas stations, safe toll roads and the Green Angels roadside assistance trucks.
: How long will it take to drive?
Laredo to San Miguel can be driven in about 8-10 hours, suggest arriving in Laredo so you can drive in Mexico during daylight hours.
: What paperwork should I obtain/take with me?
Your car papers should include the title, letter of permission from you bank if they are the title holder, page 1 & 2 of your U.S. car insurance and a credit card in your name for the ond required for U.S. cars to enter Mexico.
: Should I get vehical insurance?
Definitely get Mexico auto insurance. You can get it anywhere on the border, there is an AAA office in Laredo (on I-35) where you can buy the coverage. This is important because car accidents in Mexico are crimminal, not civil, matters like in the U.S.
San Miguel should be a treat...at 6,000 ft above sea-level, you'll enjoy beautiful weather. have a safe trip.

Car Insurance

: Should I get vehical insurance?
You may want to consider getting car insurance BEFORE the border. My understanding is that it will be much more expensive to wait and buy at the border. A post a little after (above) yours here suggested calling Sanborn's 800 number. Another company that friends have used is Lewis and Lewis Insurance Agency 800-966-6630 http://www.mexicanautoinsurance.com
