Tequila, Jalisco

On our next tour of Mexico, the four brothers want to go to Tequila for the night. I have heard it described as "Six Flags over Margaritaville," but it is a Puebla Magico and should be interesting. Anyone have suggestions for hotel and sights? Gracias, David

I have been to Tequila, although we did not spend the night. I remember it being a modest colonial city surrounded by Blue Agave fields. The city itself did not seem all that interesting. I have no idea why someone would characterize it as "Six Flags over Margaritaville".

There is a Tequila museum, worth a visit. The main attraction is the tour of the Jose Cuervo distillery. There is a modest church on the main square, mostly memorable because the entire church was an exvoto, the largest exvoto that I have ever seen by far. (An exvoto is an offering to God, usually given after having received something, especially something that you prayed for.)

I recall that we had lunch in a restaurant across the street from the distillery, looked nice, food not memorable.

Tequila is worth seeing, but don't expect too much.

Hacienda San Jose del Refugio - Casa Herradura - is a worthwhile tour. I did it a few years ago with a friend who really wanted to go to Tequila. I've also heard, but only heard, that more intimate tours of the smaller distilleries (if that's the correct terminology) can be very worthwhile. I can't remember which ones, though.

My impression from friends who've been there more recently than I is that the town itself has been spit-polished considerably in the last few years, and that Cuervo money may be behind it. Not sure if that's the case, but that was the impression they'd received.

No matter what, Tequila is worth a visit. I mean....it's TEQUILA!

This website should reveal good info:

Even the non-drinkers in our group enjoyed the Casa Herradura tour. It is amazing to see the production process. The only things in the tequila are agave and water. It is a totally natural process.
I worked in food manufacturing for a number of years and always enjoy seeing how things are made.
The tours are available in English and require a fair amount of walking.

Good Morning raferguson,

You said " . . . . . . . . I remember it being a modest colonial city surrounded by Blue Agave fields. The city itself did not seem all that interesting. I have no idea why someone would characterize it as "Six Flags over Margaritaville". "

I think you hit it bang on! Someone must have been to a different Tequila, Jalisco than I visited for several hours . . . . . . . . . . or maybe took the tour of the distillery (and tasting room) before visiting the town. "Six Flags over Margaritaville"????????

The city has some nice colonial buildings but it is on the quiet side if you do not visit during fiesta time.

Thanks for your help with my visit to Tequila. I asked my friend what he meant by "Six Flags over Margaritaville." He mentioned several of the distilleries have rides that take you to the different parts of the facilities. He showed me the latest 2010 Lonely Planet Mexico which describes the Mundo Cuervo distillery as a "veritable tequila theme park." Maybe to him, with his exuberance and a few margaritas, it seemed like "Six Flags over Margaritaville."
