We just moved to Merida three weeks ago from the Xalapa area...a pueblo about 20 miles out of the city....be glad to share info...Campeche is still under water from Isidore, but hopefully will be passable by the time of your trip....it is a long hard drive....not all the roads are so good...from Campeche to Villahermosa there is lots of road constuction... : The roads are fine. For part of the trip there are toll roads. Between Mérida and Chompotón the free road is okay.
: : The scenery is better if you hug the coast through Cd. del Carmen. Alternatively, going through Escárcega allows a stop at Palenque. If you're doing a round trip you'll probably want to do a loop.
: : If you're just driving it takes 2 days. The overnight choices are Villahermosa and Cd. del Carmen (or Escárcega, depending on which way you go). The hotels in Escárcega fill up early.
: : You can get better suggestions if you give more information. Why are you going to Veracruz? Aren't you interested in seeing anything on the way?
: I mentioned Vera Cruz only for its prominence. : Actually my interest is getting to Jalapa in the most expeditious manner possible. I want to take a good look at the area as a place to live. I may or may not continue on to my nomal stomping grounds at Lake Chapala. I was in Merida on the first Tampa Progreso ferry and stayed for a couple of weeks before I flew on to Oaxaca. Frankly the lowland climate is not to my liking. : and frankly the lowland weather is not to my taste so I won't be sightseeing.
