Sonoyta, Sonora as a border crossing

On the advice of Tony Burton, I crossed at Sonoyta as an alternative to Nogales or any other western crossing. Excellent advice. For those coming from the western States and Provinces, consider using US highway 85. You can access 85 from either Interstate 8, 10 and 17, or highway 60. We bypassed Phoenix and Tucson using this route. There are adequate to decent lodgingings in Ajo (40 miles from the border), Why (25 miles from the border) and Lukeville (at the border US side). None are more than 3 stars. Although it was September 11/02 when we crossed, I was amazed by the 15 police vehicles we saw between Ajo and the border! While the border itself is open from 6:00 am to midnight, the office for your vehicle permit doesn't open until 8:00 am. Make certain you have your copies of Registration, Passport and FM3 or FMT or FM2. There are two copy places there if you forget. The office is linked into the new computer registration system, so be certain to check in wherever you take your vehicle back out of the country. The crossing was very easy. The Agents were polite and helpful. The 18 km check was also easy, although we were stopped and contents looked at. Both use the red light/green light sytem, but I suspect the number of greens is pretty small! The traffic volume when we went was not heavy at all, with no more than 3 cars/trucks at any point in time. The road south from Sonoyta is good, although not divided nor Autopista until after Caborca, 150 miles/240 km from Sonoyta. This will be my western crossing of choice in future! Suerte David
