Janet you should go to the AAA and get their MEX insurance. They use GNP (Grupo Nacional Provinsial) which is one of the largest and best insurance companies in MEX.
Don't buy online or at the border.
: Is it cheaper to get insurance online or at the border?
: Janet

So I shouldn't use Sanborn's online??

I am in the process of getting insurance online through Sanborn's. The prices seem reasonable. Is there a particular reason you recommend AAA over Sanborn's online?
Anyone have comments on Sanborn's either positive or negative??
Thanks,
Andrew

AAA is OK, but so are many others, including Sanborn. The advantage in being insured by a Mexican company is prompt action by local representatives when you need it. For trip insurance, I think I would rather go with Sanborn. As a resident of México, I chose to do business with a local rep of a large national company.

AAA sells Mexican Insurance from a large highly respected company in Mexico. Claims, like any other insurance company south of the border, are handled in MX by Mexican adjusters or whoever is the people that handle car issues down there.
In addition, AAA is easier to find and you get real paperwork, not e-mail or faxed policies. I may be to cautious, but I don't trust that kind of paperwork in the event of a problem.
: : I am in the process of getting insurance online through Sanborn's. The prices seem reasonable. Seguros Tepeyac and Sanborns

I've used two suppliers, San Xavier (http://www.mexican-autoinsurance.com/) and Sanborns. I haven't had claims with either, so I can't comment on that aspect.
I used San Xavier the first time. My recollection is that the carrier was Seguros Tepeyac, the fifth largest Mexican insurance company. The rate was better for comparable insurance. I used Sanborns the second time because I wanted to get the driving log books.
The first time, I was going to buy insurance through AAA in Tucson Arizona. The staff there knew less about Mexico than did I. They couldn't make any useful comment on my planned itinerary, etc. They provided an inaccurate map of Culiacan. And they provided inaccurate information about the border crossing.
The most they could do was tell me how important it was to have auto insurance and that they could sell it to me.

I think that reputation is a must when dealing with insurance carriers. GNP is the largest insurance co. in Mexico. AAA may not be knowledgeable about traveling to MX, but there are so many sites, as well as forums such as this to all the missing pieces of the puzzle.
: I've used two suppliers, San Xavier (http://www.mexican-autoinsurance.com/) and Sanborns. Sanborn's lost a lot of its luster; too expensive but maybe their prices went down.
Check also the following sites:
www.mexicanautoinsurance.com/
www/homestead.com/mexicaninsurance/mexins.html
In all cases, please read very carefully:
"How to make a claim"

All insurance in Mexico is by Mexican companies. AAA and Sanborns are merely agents.
On the other hand, most of the large Mexican companies these days seem to be owned by major American companies. So perhaps we're getting the best (or worst) of both worlds.
:AAA is OK, but so are many others, including Sanborn. Should I get insurance online or at the border

I like Vallarta Bound went through AAA to get my insurance. My rational was this, it is better to go through an agent with deep pockets than a small online agent or a small agent at the border. AAA is well known, big, and for the most part knows what they are doing. If for any reason I should have a claim and it is not honored in Mexico by the insuring company, I will sue the crap out of AAA under agency law back in California.
