Safe border crossing from NM

We are heading down to Puerto Vallarta, for our annual 4.5 month stint, right after Thanksgiving. Heading due south we would normally go through Juarez. Seems like a bad idea this year with all the drug-lord activity. We are also a bit worried about heightened bandito action in isolated areas.

Can anyone make a suggestion of a safe place to cross and a good route to P.V? We are fine with going out of our way as much as needed.

Good grief - don't panic, I promise you will arrive at your destination safely. We make the trip probably 3 or 4 times per year to NM and back to Alamos, Sonora. We drive to Nogales, Az and cross the border there. No problema. Highway 15 from Nogales, Mx is a toll road and quite safe. Lots of places to spend the night with no worries. I would more about the nights in ABQ orTucson than in any hotel in Mexico. PM me if you want specifics.

A recent meeting I attended with a security specialist from the US Consulate reiterated that one should avoid traveling at night, especially through less populated areas.
He stated that bandito activity, particularly impersonating police officers, stopping motorists and robbbing them, happens almost exclusively at night.
While here is no need to panic, one should also be aware of things that could happen. In my opinion, night time highway travel in Mexico is more hazardous than US night time highway travel.
Be careful and have a good trip.

There are at least a dozen reasons not to drive at night in Mexico; banditos are only one reason of that dozen.
