Route from Tamazunchale to Poza Rica

Can't Post | Private Reply
Part of a much longer route I'm planning for this fall will take me from the Queretaro area along Highways 120 and 85 through places like Jalpan and Xilitla and to Tamazunchale. However there appear to be a couple of ways to get from Tanazunchale to Hwy 180 and Poza Rica. Anyone have any experience with these roads. I'll be riding a touring motorcycle and it would likely be late October or early November. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll assume you're referring to the two options at Huejutla of (1) going north to Tempoal and than back southeast on #127 to intersect #180 at El Alazan, or (2) heading roughly southeast over the mountains to intersect with #180 just north of Alamo?

I've been over the Tamazunchale - Huejutla - Tempoal route (a few years ago) and it was fine, if a bit curvy in places, and a bunch of topes. I actually drove #127 up through Tempoal and on north last year and that part was fine then too. Ought to be an enjoyable drive.

I've no experience with the other route. But based on my limited knowledge of the mountain roads in that part of Veracruz/Hidalgo I'd venture to guess that it will be even more curvy. My map also shows a short stretch of dirt road in the middle (Llano to La Reforma) although that may no longer be accurate.

Kind of depends on just how much adventure you're looking for.

Don't know if thathelps any.

Regards

Ed

Thanks for the info. Yes I was referring to the two options. You're probably right that it would be a safer bet to for north to Temp and then back south-east from there on Hwy 127. Also on my GR map there seems to be an east-west road that crosses over to 127 before teaching Temp. But that might also be a bit risky. I don't mind curves and mountains but gravel stretches, even fairly short ones, are something I want to avoid on this large motorcycle.
Thanks,
John

Might be worth looking at. That little stretch (intersects #127 at Tantoyuca) shows as paved on my recent Guia Roji map. You might ask someone when you get to the intersection.

Yes, I'm referring to the road that goes to Tantoyuca. It's marked as a secondary highway on my GR as well, which I assume means it's paved. But you're right, the thing to do is ask someone when we get there.
Thanks Ed and Fran for your help.

The June/July AIM - Adventures in Mexico Newsletter is all about Xilitla and the surrounding area with lots of directions, info about the roads etc. It's only $4 to buy the AIM issues individually. Go to www.mexiconewsletter.com to order.
