Road Condition-HW 16 Chihuahua to Hermosillo

Can't Post |
We plan on taking our 25' MH into the Copper Canyon area Mar 03. Will go from Big Bend Natl Park to Presidio Tx to cross. Then to Chihuahua to Creel. Will spend considerable time there at the KOA campground in Creel(leave MH and take the train to Los Mochis and back, drive our Tow car to Batopilas and back, Drive to Baseachic Falls, Etc.--lots to do--we have been there.)
We would then like to take HW 16 westward from La Junta to Hermosillo and then points south. Anyone made that trip lately? Road conditions? Or better yet, how about the road HW 12 that goes South to Cuidad Obregon midway to Hermosillo(off HW 16)?
Any thoughts or info from Copper Canyon travellers will be appreciated.

I have some experience in that area, as well as a lot of interest.
First of all Presidio, Texas is my home and you have picked a good place to start your trip/fun (Big Bend region of Texas), as well as an easy border crossing (Presidio/Ojinaga).
My main focus is on Hwy 16 between Chihuahua City and Hermosillo. The road quality in the state of Chihuahua is good all the way to the Sonora state line. As you enter the Sierra Madre on Hwy 16, you will encounter lots of hilly, curvy roadway. If you've been to Creel before, you know what I mean. Oh, did I forget to mention the scenery is great?
Once you cross into Sonora, the road quality (on Hwy 16) is noticeably rougher. The last time I took this route was almost four years ago, so maybe it's been improved. The road continues through very mountainous terrain going west towards Hermosillo. Coupled with the road conditions, don't plan on making real great time through the Sierra Madre, but you're on vacation!
I have never traveled Hwy 12 south to Cd. Obregon, but this is in my plans for December. If I don't forget, I will post a trip report when I get home (early January). I talked to a trucker who traveled it and read a mention of the road on another internet site, but not a lot of info is out there on Hwy 12.
I would characterize Hwy 16 between Basaseachic and Hermosillo as very lightly traveled. There is a Pemex near Basaseachic and maybe another between there and Hermosillo. There are some small towns along the way, but not a whole lot else. You won't encounter much traffic at all.
I hope this was of some help. I'll try to post more details in early January.

John--Thanks for your informative reply to my questions. Great to see there are others who love the CC area. We have been there several times, mostly by bus from TX but once we drove our toyota P/U all the way to Batopilas(what a drive!). We have also hiked from Batopilas to Urique and then hitched a ride out of Urique canyon to the R/R and back to Creel----We love the area. But this will be our 1st trip to MX in our RV.

We plan on staying at the Mennonite RV park in Cuauhtemoc(don't remember the name off hand) on the way to Creel. Have you stayed at the Creel KOA? Then going westward we plan to stay at the San Lorenzo Ranch campground(Fernando Dominguez) at Basaseachic. It sounds like a nice stop.

i took this road last year. its a more narrow road in fairly good condition. sharp turns, low mountains. seems like about half way to cuidad obregon it got into lower land and became an easier drive.
