Return of the "Tranvia" to the D.F.

Now that they have the first phase of the Tren Suburbano in operation, the D.F. government has just announced that they plan on constructing a surface trolley (tranvia) line from Buenavista station to the Zocalo (actually the corner of Pino Suarez and Izazaga). Contract to go out for bids, award due in December, projected operational date Sept 2010.

There is a good (Spanish language) report here:
http://www2.esmas.com/...-proyecto-tranvia-df

10.8 km, 28 stations, connections with Metro lines 1, 2, 3, 8 & B. 16 kph (10 mph). 12 train sets of 2 motor cars each, with capacity for 70 seated and up to 170 standing in each car.

Interestingly, they refer to this line as "Line 1" which begs the question of whether they are thinking about the possibility of more routes.

Anything that helps alleviate traffic in the D.F. is good.

Regards

Ed

When I lived in the DF in the early '80s, I often rode the old tranvía (back then we called it the trolebús) from the house in Col. Cerro Prieto, north of the airport, to the nearest metro station. This was back in the days of just three metro lines.

One morning the trolebús had an accident involving a car or two and all of us passengers had to get off the bus and walk--but to WHERE! I had no clue which way to go to find alternate transportation. As far as I knew, we were out in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately, some other passengers took me under their wing and shepherded me to the nearest metro, just a few blocks away.
