Renewing Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am planning on traveling to the border in a couple of days with the intention of renewing my temporary vehicle importation permit. Currently my wife (who is a Mexican citizen) is listed as the importer. I plan on changing it to my name (a US Citizen by birth) so that once I process my FM3 we will no longer have to make the trip to the border every 180 days.

My concern is with our trip back into the States. My US vehicle registration expired in April '10 and we no longer have US insurance since the car is always in Mexico. I am waiting to hear back from my Mexican insurance company to see if they offer any options to insure the car for a couple of days while it's across the border. Does anyone have any experience with short-term car insurance in the US? We will be crossing the border into Texas but my original plates are from Indiana. Any thoughts on driving in Texas with expired out-of-state plates? Texas offers a temporary registration for 72 or 144 hours but that requires insurance from a provider licensed to write insurance in Texas. Any thoughts on the subject are much appreciated.

Thanks!
