It depends on what part of Mexico you'll be living in. You can legally register an American car for use in the border region. Mexico is currently legalizing all small, pre-1991 trucks. Call your local Mexican consulate for all specifics. You could always sell the vehicle at the border for more than it will bring you in the US and purchase a registered vehicle in the city where you'll be going.
