Has anyone crossed at the Presidio Texas/ Ojinaga Mexico border lately? Is there full service there (vehicle permit and FMT, etc.)? How is the Hiway 16, I believe, across to Chihuahua?

How is the Hiway 16, I believe, across to Chihuahua?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Presidio is a city of over 4,000 people, while Ojinaga is a city of approximately 30,000. The international bridge and respective customs and immigration facilities on both sides of the border are full service operations, seemingly headed for even more growth in the very near future. You will be able to get everything you need for a trip into Mexico at the Ojinaga port of entry. Mexico insurance is available on both sides of the border here. Presidio even has a Mexican consulate office (right past the Cibolo Creek bridge, on the right, as you come into town).
Hwy 16 to Chihuahua City is a good road, although with some hilly, curvy spots. It is a 145 mile drive there. At Coyame is a Pemex station. Otherwise, the next services are in Aldama, a scenic little town outside Chihuahua City. Overall, Hwy 16 is a nice desert drive, leading you to a worthwhile destination, that of Chiahuahua City.
While in Chihuahua, visit the Plaza de Armas and its beautiful cathedral, the Pancho Villa museum (residence), among other things. Guided, English-speaking tours are available there for a modest fee.
Happy travels!
John Ferguson

Thanks John for this info, I have another question. I thinking of crossing at Presidio but plan on driving to Zacatecas. I see on the AAA map that there is Hwy. 18 to Ciudad Camargo, on my Guia Roji it shows as Hwy. 9 , Is this a good road or am I better off going thru Chihuahua on Hwy 16
Thanks again

John, thanks so much for the great info about the border crossing there at Presidio/Ojinaga. And what a great little website for Ojinaga. That border town seems to be a cut above the rest.
Thanks again.

Question, John Ferguson

John, at other border crossings (El Paso, Laredo) the recommendation one always gets is to "try to come across mid-week and as early in the morning as you can" to 'avoid' the big lines, etc.
Is this the case also at Presidio, or is this crossing more laid back?
Thanks.
Rick

Boyce summed it up pretty well. No facilities for 150 miles, but you'll make good time. It saves mucho tiempo if you're headed towards Zacatecas (great town, by the way!).

: : Is the one route more senic than the other.
: : How long (intime or distance ) is it via Ciuda Camargo versus via Chihuahua.
:
: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
: The route to Chihuahua City is more scenic and interesting. You can make a stop-off in Coyame and visit the grutas (caves) there. In the warm months you can also enjoy a swim in the spring fed pool. Right before you reach Chihuahua City, you'll pass through Aldama, which is a charming little town.
: Hwy 16 to Chihuahua City is 145 miles and takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
: The highway to Ciudad Camargo is recommended if you're headed south out of Presidio/Ojinaga, and if you're wanting to reel in some miles. It's a 150 mile drive with NO facilities to speak of the whole way. It's a good road, though. You can travel its length in a couple of hours, putting you at least an hour ahead of where you'd be taking the Chihuahua City route. Whenever I'm headed towards Mazatlan, Zacatecas, or Guadalajara, this is the road I take.
: When I'm in no hurry, the road to Chihuahua (and its accompanying sites of interest) is my preference.
: Regarding hotels in Presidio, you have three choices:
: Riata Inn (newest, but don't know their number)
: Three Palms Inn 915-229-3211
: La Siesta 915-229-3611
: I'd recommend the one of the first two choices.
: There are also several hotels in Ojinaga. I don't know their numbers, but there are are some good ones there. Refer to ojinaga.com if you want more info on hotels in Ojinaga.
