Glen,
Prices in Playa Del Carmen ar4e expensive as they are in any tourist area. Your best bet on buying beer by the case is to talk to the driver of the beer truck when he makes a delivery to your complex or to a bar in the area. He's going to charge you a lot of money for the first case, but every case thereafter will be dirt cheep. The reason for this is the deposit on the bottles and the cardboard case. Not too many years ago (3 years ago) the entire cost from Cancun to Tulum was littered with inexpensive motels ( 5 to 10 dollars a night) that sold beer for .25 to .50 a bottle. That same beer in Playa Del Carmen will cost you 5.00 or more depending which bar your in. Beer and groceries bought at the super market is also expensive. A few months ago I heard that K Mart and Sams are putting up a stores in Playa Del Carmen, but I haven't seen them myself. Playa Del Carmen's tourisum trade has exploded in resent years mostly because of the ferry that runs from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel, and because of it proxsimity from Cancun and Tulum.
Don't be afraid to rent a car and explore some of my old haunts along the dirt roads that are north and south of Playa Del Carmen.
Have fun,
Anthony
