Pickup and motorcycle

Can't Post | Private Reply
I just got an e-mailed question I don't know the answer to.

A motorcycle can be brought in at the same time a pickup enters. No problem there. But can the pickup and the motorcycle get separate permits at different times, so they can be in country at the same time?

Nope, at least not unless they're owned by a couple who can put one in one name and one in the other.

I researched this subject extensively in 2002, and at that time a single person could bring in a motorcycle and a truck, IF, the motorcycle was less than 400cc. (or maybe it was 400cc and less) I do not know what the current regulation is. However, I decided against risking it, and bought the motorcycle here, instead of bringing a US one.

A friend brought in a motorcycle (over 400 cc), large trailer (full of household items), and pickup this past August. Motorcycle and trailer permits were tied to the truck permit and no stickers were put on the motorcycle or trailer.

His wife was traveling with him and she brought in a car.

They both had FM3's.

This is all I know but it did happen fairly recently and probably was done properly.

Rolly,

One can only have one TVIP at a time. When one applies for it, one can drive the (1) pickup with a (2) trailer and have a (3) motorcycle on the trailer. All three must be on the TVIP: truck, trailer, and motorcycle. Motorcycle size does not matter. You must exit with all three "vehicles" also, or the permit will not be cancelled.

BTW, I now get my permits through the Banjercito website. The TVIP comes to my house in Houston within three days via Fedex/DHL from D.F.

Saludos,

Mike

A friend (an unmarried FM3 holder) here in Ajijic hauled his big Honda Gold Wing into Mexico a few years ago in the bed of his P/U truck. Both were on the same TVIP, so when he drove back to Canada some months later he had to bring the bike back with him. Being single and assuming that he would have left the P/U in Mexico, he could NOT have returned NOB and brought the bike into Mexico separately at a different time, since his TVIP of record would have been for the P/U only.

So the answer to Rolly's question, unless the rules have changed, is: In the case of a single person, they can only be brought in together at the same time on a single TVIP, in which case they must also leave together at the same time.

Am I correct in assuming that if one wants to have the motorcycle stickered independent of the car or truck, and there are two of you, the way to do it is to put the car in one person's name and the motorcycle in anothers?

I'm going to try and buy a motorcycle when we go to the states in January. Currently, the car sticker is in my name. I'll turn it in when we cross to clear the record. Then when we return, wife driving the car and me on the bike, she will put the car in her name and I will put the motorcycle in mine.

Subsequently, when we travel to the U.S., we'll just leave the bike behind with the sticker still active.

Will that work OK?

Thanks.

That should work. Remember each of you will need a credit or debit card in the user's name, or you will have to post a cash bond.
