At first I started to say something logical like, "well if they have finished that great bridge, the rest of the road must be about done too and the opening should be imminent", but them I remembered that it is Mexico and a finished bridge is not a sure sign of anything. Is there an estimated opening that you know of Rolly?

And since I (above) put Mexico in a seemingly singular position of poor planning or at least sometimes illogical or politically motivated, I am reminded that as a young man in Louisiana, that corrupt state (Mexico has nothing on that state, at least during the times of my youth and the era of the 'Longs'!) built a huge bridge over the Mississippi River ..... but there was no approach to it on the west side of the river ... in fact it dumped right into a massive swamp. While awaiting appropriations for several years to connect it to something, it was known as the Bridge to Nowhere or, after the then Governor Jimmy Davis, the Sunshine Bridge. This bridge-to-nowhere foolishness has been repeated many times since then, not the least of which was the proposed $400 million bridge across some narrows in Alaska so the (8,000?) citizens of Ketchikan Alaska wouldn't have to take a $5 ferry across to their airport or to many visit one of their (50) friends who lived over there.

Parts of the highway are finished and in use. Building a four-lane highway through that rugged terrain is no small task, and it will take a while longer to complete.

BTW the name of the bridge is Puente Rio Baluarte.

We drove to Mazatlan from Nuevo Laredo in July. The autopista is open and in use west of Durango for about 60 km, but terminates well before El Salto. Most of the construction that is visible is in Sinaloa. I think the route through Durango is well south of Highway 40 because I don't remember seeing any construction west of El Salto . I would guess it will be several years before the highway is completely finished.

Wow. What a bridge.

(I have to confess, when I first saw this yesterday, I thought it was some kind of April Fool's-type joke since the first "photo" looks like a computer generated thingy.)
