Mexico hasn't returned my car deposit

I crossed the border yesterday and the woman in the permit office said that my deposit would be credited to my credit card today. Hasn't happened. Any suggestions on what I should do if it doesn't show up in my account by tomorrow?

If it was a US based card, the company may have not been processing refunds due to the MLK holiday. Mexico may have processed it, but you know in the US if its a holiday, everything closes. Give it a day or so and then call. It will save you a lot of time and energy. I am sure somebody processed it today and will show up. Please update when you find out. Thanks.

It finally showed up in my account this morning. So it took them 3 days. Which is fine, the problem was that the woman at the border said it would show up in my account tomorrow.

Three days works for me. It corresponds with another account that I read that said basically "it took three days".

With my US based credit card it often takes 3 or more days for a refund (say from Target or Macy's) to process through the VISA system and to show up back in my bank account. Throw in the fact that this was over the MLK holiday and I'd say that's a very reasonable time frame. Sounds like the Mexican system may be working 'just fine'. I guess I'll find out in March when I return NOB.

TxMex:

You heard what she thought you would want to hear but reality is often a far different matter. I would guess that you have submitted returns or something that requires a refund and been told NOB that it may be three to seven business days before the refund will show on your account. Such a statement recognizes that there is no personal control over batching and processing times.

It is great that your refund was processed!

Getting money back from a Mexican in only 3 days ranks high on the "modern miracle" scale, somewhere above "mandating all traffic lights have working bulbs" and just below "actually thinking something through before implementation" and of course far far below "the CFE lowering it's price per KWH to actual production cost".

No miracle at all. I suspect that the money probably was credited to the account the next day just as this person was told it would be, but the US or Canadian bank held it for a few days before it showed up in their account. My US bank does it all the time. Why do we persist with so much pessimism about Mexico? Things can and do work here and it's getting better all the time!

I'm sure you're serious. But for my part, it's not at all pessimism or negative per se, it's simply based on living here. You need a small example, read the recent threads about Bancomer, I could easily dig you up two or three people who fought for months to get back rental security deposits, but those are just documented facts, I'd not want them to get in the way of your optimism.

Things like that don't happen only in Mexico! I've had to fight a landlord for rental deposits back in the States several times. I finally learned my lesson and before moving out would tell my landlord he could have my deposit in lieu of the last month's rent.
