The old adage used to be "stay driving in the US as long as reasonably possible". I think it may still be an wise decision. A friend, who has driven Hiway 2 often has said in the past, "Mexican hiway 2 (is) miles and miles of ugly desert with absolutely no acceptable rest stops or emergency stops." He and others have said that the Lukeville crossing is an OK alternative to using some of Hiway 2 south from there (but not on weekends!), but for my money, I'd go on over to Tucson and use the Mariposa crossing in Nogales. And, unless you're coming in the dead of winter you might consider coming the Salt Lake City route from Seattle rather than going down I-5. Late November could be iffy 'tho.
