This might be better as subject matter on the Learn Spanish forum, but here goes: One fine point of Spanish-as-spoken-in-Mexico pronunciation is the division of syllables. If you want to pronounce casa (house) for example, you say CAH-sah. The 's' is attached to the last syllable. If you want to pronounce perro, it's peh-rroh--remember that the 'rr' is one letter. If you want to pronounce Melaque, it's meh-LAH-keh. In English, the division of syllables is different. In English, consonants are often pronounced at the end of syllables, rather than at the beginning of syllables. The English-language way of pronouncing casa would be cahs-ah. You don't want to do that; it's a dead giveaway that you speak Spanish fairly incorrectly. Try dividing the syllables correctly and you will be immediately pleased with the improvement in your Spanish. Guapo (the poster to whom I am replying) and another poster have both posted the pronunciation of Melaque as it would be said by native English speakers. If you want to speak Spanish with a less obvious English-language accent, learn to pronounce words as the Mexicans do, with the consonants attached to the beginning of syllables. Meh-LAH-keh. http://www.mexicocooks.typepad.com
