Los Angeles to Nogales AZ is 551 miles about 9+ hrs. according to mapquest.com. From Nogales to Mazatlan it's about 750 miles and depending on how you drive anywhere from 12 to 15 hrs. From Nogales to Maz is a long one day drive but I've done it several times and the road, by MExican standards, is very good. It's too long for one day but very short for two days. It all depends on your tolerance and the time of year.

Count on a full day's drive to Nogales. Guaymas to Maz in a day is reasonable but anything more than that is really pushing it. Just crossing the border - paperwork will slow you down a couple of hours at the minimum.
Some time ago I figured five hundred miles and change to Nogales from LA, then it's seven hundred fifty from the border to Maz.
Unless I know exactly where I'm going (been there before) I sure don't want to arrive at my destination after dark especially if it's a big city and my stop isn't a local landmark.

I did that trip on July 3, 2002. Bad day too much traffic. However, I left on July 3, 2002 from Pasadena, CA. and arrived at the border at 12:00 a.m., mostly due to traffic. Then at around 1:30 a.m. I crossed the border into Nogales, MX, got a red light had to unload everything out of the car for inspection. It took about 1/2 hour.
I arrived in Mazatlan on July 4, 2002 at 4:40 p.m. local time or 3:40 p.m. Los Angeles time. Roads were in good condition and had no difficulties. It helps if you can get your importation permit in Tijuana before you go, worth it, and perhaps you may want to do that. I did and had no regrets.
Advisable? Well, I love marathon driving. I did this non-stop, It would have been shorter, but I lost a lot of time in the 10 fwy during rush traffic (bad idea), but what the heck, I did it. I would not suggest you do this unless you have someone to help you drive. I did all of the driving myself.
When I had the chance I did 75 to 80 mph in the U.S. Side and about the same while in MX. If you wish to stop for the night, is kinda hard to figure where you'll end up, but Guaymas is to short of a distance, and if you pass this locale, you might as well go all the way. Mazatlan is a tourist area, so places to stay are plentiful. However, there is this nice motel called Trebble on the north bound of the couta and it is a nice place.
E-mail me should you wish more information. By the way the cuotes may set you back about 50 dollars. Good luck!!!!
