Just got back from a 5000 mile road trip into Southern Mexico.

Ensenada to Cuetzalan, Puebla. Its seems like all of the Mexican Military is on the border. There were no Military checkpoints past Sonora. Me and my wife and two daughters had a great time. We met up with my third daughter who is studying at the University of the Americans in Puebla. For two weeks, the only other American I encountered, staggered out of a bar I was passing by and complained that he had gone into the bar sober two hours earlier and spent $28.00 dollars and here he was two hours later and still sober. He then stormed off. I never got to say anything. I did see later a few Americans in smoking cigarettes in a few of the cafes in Guanajuato. Otherwise the only other tourists were European. Spent some great time in Guadalajara. Overall, we never felt threatened or had any other problems. Cuetzalan is one of those Pueblos Magicos that is set in the Coffee Country. It's very beautiful with Caves and Waterfalls as it is very tropical. Leon, Guanajuato seemed really prosperous. Overall, I think there were more trucks on the road than cars. I think Mexico is weathering the crisis pretty well considering that the travel business has all but died. Everyone else seems like they have enough to do and are doing it.

Interesting you should say that about travel to Mexico. Today's Dallas Morning News quoted mexican officals as saying that total travel, business and leisure, to Mexico in 2010 was up several percentage points from both 2008 and 2009.

Ugh. Puebla definitely is not Southern Mexico. Sorry, just silly pet peeve of mine. Had to say so.

Yet it is south of Yucatan and that is considered the south east. An easy assumption to make. It is after all, far south of Tijuana.

Surebought you are absolutely right about Cuetzalan. It is a jewel as long as you don't get caught driving those mountain roads in that heavy fog. Lots of character there. Great place to escape with a loved one for the weekend next to a fireplace, etc. Most people don't get out to a place like that, so you certainly saw some of the best of what Mexico has to offer.

I did a Masters degree at the UDLA, so I'm sure your daughter is having a blast there. Likely more partying than studying going on though. Puebla is also one of my favorite and not so well known outside Mexico. Did you like the city?

Cuetzalan's cave systems were the object our our very first trip to Mexico, in 1980. Fascinating, challenging and potentially very hazardous.

But more than the caves, it was that first taste of Mexico that made me want more.
