Issue of Expired Plates from My Country of Origin

Hi All,

I'm dealing with an issue that has me confused, mostly because of conflicting information. Here's my situation. I have plates on my car from British Columbia, Canada. The plates expire on Feb 28, as does my Canadian auto insurance. I have Mexican insurance for the car and registration for the car in my name, that is separate from the plates. The registration is valid for as long as I own the viehicle.

My question is this: Do I need to have valid plates on my car, even though the insurance would be worthless down here? Or is it not an issue since the plates are out of Mexico's jurisdiction? If any of you would know of a clear answer, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Nathan

Except in Baja, you are not required to have valid plates. You must have plates, but they can be expired. What counts is your Mexican vehicle permit which remains valid so long as your FM3 is valid.

Be sure your Mexican insurance does not require valid plates and/or foreign insurance. Some do that, most do not.
